Greve in ChiantiAccording to many, Greve in Chianti is the entrance gate into the Chianti region, as it is the first big town you’ll come across when travelling from the south of Florence to Siena. Greve in Chianti is named after the river that runs through it and is located at around 236 and 893 above sea level. Greve’s history is connected to the Castle of Montefioralle, situated above the town, being the castle’s marketplace starting in the 13th century. Due to its perfect strategic position, a market was held every Saturday on a special shaped square called the main piazza in Greve, which nowadays still takes place very Saturday! The beautiful small fortified village of Montefioralle, located less than one mile from the main piazza, must be visited while staying in Greve! Some of the shops at this piazza are very famous, such as Antica Macelleria Falorni, a butchershop and the Bottega dell'Artigianato, a shop producing hand-woven baskets. Here, the Palazzo del Comune can be found as well, the city hall designed in neo-Renaissance style. The Santa Croce Church, built in neo-classic style is also situated at the main square of Greve, displaying some important works such as a 14th century fresco from Lorenzo di Bicci, representing the Virgin Mary with Child. If you want to visit a nice museum, it should be the Museum of Sacred Art, also located close to the square. However, the Wine Museum is also very interesting for wine lovers, as it offers wine tastings of more than 200 labels from the area. The most easy option to reach Greve in Chianti is to fly to Florence and from there drive to your destination.
The most known and visited area of Tuscany is the Chianti area, comprising around eight Chianti towns. The borders of this area aren’t very clear, but it can be said that in general it extends over the provinces of Florence and Siena, covering all of the area between the two cities and extending to the east toward the Valdarno and to the west to the Val d'Elsa. The Chianti landscape is unique and very beautiful, including picturesque little village, forests and hills covered with vineyards and olive trees. This region is of course also famous for its outstanding red wines, presented in bottles in woven baskets. The Chianti wines are characterized by intense aromas of fruit and flowers, easily drinkable with a smooth aftertaste. Traditional farming is still an everyday part of life in this region, including as afore mentioned wine making, but also olive oil production is very important here, making this region so attractive to tourists.
