Radda in ChiantiRadda in Chianti is a medieval town situated in the province of Siena, fenced by thick defensive walls. The town is relatively small, covering an area of around 80 square kilometre and mostly known for its natural beauty. Nowadays, the local economy revolves around agriculture, wine, clothes and furniture. Located in between the valleys of Arbia and Pesa, Radda was the headquarter of the Chianti League when being under Florentine control. The seat of the Florentine governor was situated in the 15th century Palazzo del Podestà, which medieval architecture has been very well maintained over the years and still serves as the City Hall. At the main square of Radda you’ll find the Church of San Niccolò, built in Romanesque style, displaying a venerated wooden Crucifix from the 15th century. Relatively close to the main square, Grand Duke's Ice house can be found; here snow is preserved and turned into ice. A very photogenic old fountain can be found in the city centre as well, still in very good condition. If you would like to visit a museum while staying at Radda, a good tip would be to visit the Museum of Sacred Art of Chianti, established in the Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria in Prato. In this museum, a polyptich by Neri di Bicci picturing the Virgin Mary with child and saints. Of course, with wine being a main product of Radda, several wine shops are located in the town, offering wine tastings, naturally including the Chianti Classico DOC. Radda in Chianti can be reached by flying to Florence and from there taking the car.
The most known and visited area of Tuscany is the Chianti area, comprising around eight Chianti towns. The borders of this area aren’t very clear, but it can be said that in general it extends over the provinces of Florence and Siena, covering all of the area between the two cities and extending to the east toward the Valdarno and to the west to the Val d'Elsa. The Chianti landscape is unique and very beautiful, including picturesque little village, forests and hills covered with vineyards and olive trees. This region is of course also famous for its outstanding red wines, presented in bottles in woven baskets. The Chianti wines are characterized by intense aromas of fruit and flowers, easily drinkable with a smooth aftertaste. Traditional farming is still an everyday part of life in this region, including as afore mentioned wine making, but also olive oil production is very important here, making this region so attractive to tourists.
