San GimignanoSan Gimignano is a medieval city located in the province of Siena in Tuscany, known for its beautiful architecture and atmosphere. The main image of San Gimignano are the fourteen towers and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All the roads in this town lead to the highest point where the Piazza della Cisterna and the Piazza Duomo are located. The Piazza della Cisterna is a wonderful piazza surrounded by medieval buildings and towers, named after the 13th century well. Every Thursday a market is hosted here. The Piazza Duomo is the town’s church square, hosting the Chiesa Collegiata, built in a Tuscan Romantic Style, dating back to the 12th century. Of course, restaurants and cafés can be found at these squares as well. Sit down at a terrace and enjoy some of the local specialities, such as a risotto with saffron, rabbit with Vernaccia wine and rice cake. If you are interested in learning more about architecture and history of the Middle Ages in Tuscany, you must visit the San Gimignano 1300 museum, displaying how the city looked like in the year 1300. However, if you’re more into art, the Pinacoteca Civica museum is more suitable for you. In order to have a great view over the town, you must visit the Torre Grosso; the 54 meter high tower of the Palazzo Populo. This tower can be climbed and the palazzo serves as a the City Hall and as a museum, containing a fresco from Lippo Memmi and paintings from many others. In order to reach San Gimignano, you can fly to either Pisa or Florence and take the car from there.
