SienaSiena is a medieval city located in Tuscany and in the eponymous province of Siena. Due to the fact that its medieval townscape has been maintained so well, the town is one of Italy’s main tourists attractions. Moreover, Siena is also known for its famous Palio run, a horse race held twice every summer at the ‘Il Campo’ piazza. This race can also be seen in the James Bond movie ‘Quantum of Solace’. You will find many statues of the she-wolf who suckled Remus and Romulus throughout the city, as it is said that Siena was founded by Senius, the son of Remus. An example of the great Italian gothic architecture can be seen in the ‘Duomo di Siena’, which was finished in 1380, including the gothic octagonal pulpit manufactured by Nicola Pisano. Also built around this time is the Palazzo Pubblico; a gothic palace, serving as Siena’s City Hall and museum displaying fresco’s from different Italian artists. A main feature of this palace the ‘Torre del Mangia’; a clock tower, which can be climbed offering a great view of the square and city. Near to the ‘Duomo di Siena’, the house where St. Catherine of Siena was born can be found; a famous Sienese mystic who died in 1380. Her house was bought by the Council of Siena in 1466 and is transformed into a real sanctuary. Her body was buried in the Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, whereas her mummified head is the most important assets of the Basilica di San Domenico, dating back to 1465, built just outside the centre of Siena. If you visit Siena in summer time and you like jazz, the Siena Jazz festival is definitely something to attend, featuring well-known to emerging artists on different squares in the city centre. Most people travelling to Siena fly to Florence or Pisa, and take the car from there in order to reach their destination.
